I just finished school and passed my Abitur with an overall average of 1,9. I would now like to take a break from the normal life in Germany before I go to university, because I want to experience another country and a different culture. I have started this gap year with some internship’s in a dental clinic and a surgery center due to the fact that I want to study medicine. That’s why I am especially interested in the health programs of the organization. I have already travelled with a friend in the US and Canada to see new spots and experience the country as a backpacker. This October and November 2016 I am working in a hospital as a nurse, in order to help people, make new experiences and get used to work in a hospital, because I want to be a doctor.
Due to the fact that the project I am working in is only announced a couple of weeks before I leave Germany, I have chosen different options where I want to work.
Another project I would be very interested in is educating kids in schools. I like kids a lot and would be very happy to teach (for example English) and spend time with them. I have already done an internship in a primary school and worked there as an assistance teacher.
Apart from this I am taking part in the community service program, because I had a very easy and comfortable life in Germany with the only problem being worried about school. So I want to help other people in another country, who have not got the gift of clean water, enough food, education and peace. This is why I did not choose to “work and travel”, but the community service program of the American Field Service to stop taking and start giving!
I hope that, with the help of the organization, I will get close to the people of the country, being able to help them, where help is needed. I am very happy to take over a task with great responsibility, since I have fun in organizing and putting in a lot of effort in projects given to me. Furthermore I have been a pupil in a Scottish boarding school for one year. I settled in very quickly, became an ambassador of the school and I improved my language skills a lot during my stay in Scotland. This shows, that I adapt to a different surrounding quickly and that I am not scared to get to know new people. Furthermore I learned Spanish in my school for some years. Normally it is only possible to learn the basics of a new language in schools due to the fact that students and teachers are not mother-tongue speakers. That’s why I want to improve my Spanish skills and become a fluent speaker.
In my free time I like to do a lot of sports like tennis, running, volleyball and skiing. I am also very much into travelling with my family and friends in order to experience new cultures, see memorable spots and get to know new people.
