Hello everybody,

my name is Katja and I’m studying adult education and sociology at the University of Stuttgart. I’m going to finish my studies in April. I’m dreaming about living abroad since I started studying. But my dream is not only to get to know a new country, but also to learn about myself in the process. To me this trip means more than an adventure after my studies, I want to contribute to the community I am going to be involved in.

The choice for Latin Amerika was made in 2014. I was hosting a radio show with some other students at that time. We were talking to people who have been abroad. By chance, there were three guests in a row, who talked about their experiences in Latin America. The stories about life in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina fired up my interest in wanting to visit the con-tinent where these joyful and warm-hearted people live.

It means a lot to me to not visit the country as a mere tourist, I want to live among and help the people. For that reason, I started to learn Spanish during my internship in 2015. After three months of learning the language in the company I went back to the university, where I finished the A1 and A2 language levels.

I really appreciate learning from other cultures, therefore, currently I’m taking part of the cross-cultural mentoring program at my university since summer of 2016. The program aims to facilitate foreign students’ integration in German society and to help them in handling the new circumstances, which may come up in their life in Germany. Thanks to the program, I made friends from several countries. The benefit of these friendships goes beyond learning about other cultures, it also helps me to know more about my own country. These experi-ences and my pedagogical studies led me to the voluntary work with foreign youth. At the moment, I’m giving German classes to exchange students and I’m assisting young refugees with their homework. Even if I am studying adult education and most of my students are 6 to 26 years old, I can still implement what I learned at the university.

After supporting foreign youth in my home country, I want to get to know what it’s like to do it the other way around and support native youth in a country that’s foreign to me. If you need a volunteer to start at July, I believe I will be a great addition to your team and the ex-perience would benefit both, me and the team.
